Two Essays on Ghazal in India and Pakistan

Niranjan Sarkar

After I published a post on Don't Muzzle the Ghazal ("Performing Ghazals"), Niranjan Sarkar wrote a comment my mis-statement in the first sentence of that post. At my invitation, Niranjan expanded his comment into two essays, which I'm now pleased to publish here. These essays add to our understanding of the ghazal in Urdu, Hindi, and other languages of the Indian subcontinent. Together with David Jalajel's essays, they provide for good understandings of the ghazal, something we Western ghazalkars have long been in need of. I hope to host more essays on the ghazal, historical and contemporary. My thanks to Niranjan for his generosity in sharing with us.
