Toasting the Moon

Susan J. Erickson

“A toast,” he proposed “to the wild rosé moon.”
“And to what happens beneath the Beaujolais moon.”

She swirled her glass. “Its nose is smoke and violets.
Santé! To vino and a Cabernet moon.”

He sipped. “It tastes of grass and summer twilight —
with a nuanced finish of Vouvray moon.”

“This wine” said the vintner “is palate worthy.
Drink it young, paired with a Chardonnay moon.”

“Thank the noble rot,” said the sommelier.
“It imparts charisma to the Tokay moon.”

I’m swearing off the fermentation of words.
“Waiter, a carafe please, of café au lait moon.”

Moon

Niranjan Sarkar

You may feel betrayed and lonely moon,
My love when with me, is a beauty moon.

Fear not of the glamour and shine it has,
You're the only Sun, it's the only moon.

Call me with all your wishes my love,
Build me a new 'Taj' and get me moon.

Impossible it would be to compare to her,
Had you been chaste and too holy moon.

Any relation in today's nasty world,
Changes mood like the monthly moon.

I remember the tales my grandma told,
Fairy tale nights and the smiley moon.

Wouldn't it be nice to leave it alone?
Man prepares for an earthly moon.

May you be soul mate of lost loves,
For your life, I pray for thee moon.

Lunar Legacies

Robert Godwin

In ages past, the people would adore the Moon
As shamans prayed and danced and sang before the Moon.

The Moon’s eclipse was taken as the work of gods,
And sacrifices offered to restore the Moon.

When crops would fail, or rivers overflow their banks,
The people sought relief and would implore the Moon.

Sympathetic magic was his stock in trade;
Around his neck a pearl-while stone: he wore the Moon.

Our Earth’s companion was a source for many tales —
Even one of how a cow jumped o’er the Moon.

Anyone who traced the lunar path each night
Was confident there’d be, forevermore, the Moon.

Answers to that question we could never know
Until we had decided to explore the Moon.

Our instruments were sent ‘out there’ to scope things out;
We learned of giant tidal pulls that tore the Moon.

Slowly would we learn of plate tectonics’ role
In making all those fissures that now score the Moon.

We sent our best to tread that lunar soil — then quit —
Yet start up once again and head out for the Moon.

With the goal declared, the fight for Mars began;
Some more than disagreed: they did abhor the Moon!

Their scientific peers were steadily engaged
In seeking out the answer to: Wherefore the Moon?

Happily, this earthbound Robin twitters on,
Praising those who chose to not ignore the Moon.

Moon

Bridge of Sighs and weaving shark of the moon
beside me glide as i craft bark of the moon.

Days, 'black flowing river,' and having won,
yet all your crumbs lark 'neath the arc of a moon.

Samovar ethereal this way;
nor rambles by himself at the dark of the moon.

Pyramid chores, staggering chief of shades
barters blood to be monarch on the moon.

Watch Graywyvern dodging thrown coronas:
all his tumors bear the mark of the moon.

Ghazal

Joshua Gage

Blood renews the stone. Steam from our sacrifice rises to wreathe the moon.
The herbs wear off. Her screams claw open the seams of sky beneath the moon.

One by one, the stars extinguish, swallowed by the mouth of darkness.
One jagged fang remains, the yellow ruins of the night's teeth, the moon.

In the veil above the caravan, the glint off an assassin's dagger.
Carried by the desert wind, the clouds pull away to unsheathe the moon.

Drunk on plum wine, Li Po sank to kiss its koid reflection;
Dusk is a perfume bottle. I wish no kiss. Just let me breathe the moon.

The Fool steps through the curtain of the High Priestess into the water. The light
fades. The dogs begin their prayers. The Fool drowns underneath The Moon.
